Short Description
‘Abdullâh ibn Salâm converted to Islam on having his three questions answered. What are these questions?.jpg)
When ‘Abdullâh ibn Salâm heard about the arrival of the Prophet [peace be upon him] in Madînah, he came to him and said: "I am going to ask you about three things which nobody knows except a prophet: What will the first portent of the (final) Hour be? What will the first meal taken by the people of Paradisebe? How does a child resemble his father and another resemble his maternal uncle?"
The Messenger of Allâh [peace be upon him] said: "Gabriel has just now told me of their answers." ‘Abdullâh said: "He (Gabriel), from amongst all the angels, is the enemy of the Jews." The Messenger of Allâh [peace be upon him] said: "The first portent of the Hour will be a fire that will bring together the people from the east to the west. The first meal of the people of Paradisewill be the extra-lobe (i.e. caudate lobe) of a fish’s liver. As for the resemblance of the child to his parents: If a man has sexual intercourse with his wife and discharges first, the child will resemble the father. Otherwise, if the woman discharges first, the child will resemble her."
On that, ‘Abdullâh ibn Salâm said: "I testify that there is no God but Allâh and you are the Messenger of Allâh." ‘Abdullâh ibn Salâm further said: "O Messenger of Allâh! The Jews are liars and if they learn about my conversion to Islam before you ask them (about me), they will tell a lie about me." The Jews came to the Messenger of Allâh [peace be upon him] and ‘Abdullâh went inside the house.
The Messenger of Allâh [peace be upon him] asked (the Jews): "What kind of man is ‘Abdullâh ibn Salâm amongst you?" They replied: "He is the best amongst us and the son of the best amongst us." The Messenger of Allâh [peace be upon him] said: "What do you think if he embraces Islam?" The Jews said: "May Allâh save him from it." Then ‘Abdullâh ibn Salâm came out in front of them saying: "I testify that there is no God but Allâh and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allâh." On that they said: "He is the evilest amongst us and the son of the evilest amongst us." Thus, they spoke badly of him.[1]
