Short Description
"The correct religion has appeared, i.e. the religion of Christ", and abusing Islam and its men", A group of Christians called aloud.
Let me quote here the words of Ibn Katheer, May Allaah Have mercy upon him, depicting the circumstances of Damascus when Iblisian became its governor:
"Iblisian, May Allaah Curse him, met with the Christian bishops and patriarchs, whom he honored so much and visited their churches, and because of him, they gained authority and power. A group of Christians went to Hulagu in Tabriz carrying with them valuable gifts and masterpieces, and returned with a deed of security from him, and entered the city from the gate of Toma, with a held cross they were carrying overhead, whilst calling aloud: "The correct religion has appeared, i.e. the religion of Christ", and abusing Islam and its men.
They also were carrying utensils of wine, and did not pass by a mosque but that they sprayed wine at its gate. They also were carrying bottles of wine from which they were spraying the faces and clothes of people. They ordered everyone they came upon in the alleys and markets to stand in respect for their cross. Their spokesman stood to the bench of a store in a turn of the market and praised Christianity and abused Islam and its people. We all belong to Allaah, and to Him we all shall return.
They entered the mosque with wine. When this incident took place, the Muslim judges, witnesses, and jurisprudents gathered, and entered upon Iblisian in the castle to make a complaint about that, but they were humiliated and driven out, and the argument of the Christian leaders was given precedence over theirs. We all belong to Allaah, and to Him we all shall return."
These circumstances then rang the bell of a real catastrophe to happen. The Muslims were caught between the horns of a dilemma in Shaam, i.e. between the Tatars and the Christians. It became clear that there would be great cooperation between both sects, in the light of the fact that Kitbuqa, the leader of the Tatars in Shaam, was Christian, and the Christians living in Shaam knew all its hideaways and possibilities. Assuredly, their cooperation with the Tatars would be a painful strike against the Muslims.
