Short Description
Ibn Al-Atheer presented this incident under the title: "An unprecedented strange incident". What was that?
The third incident
This incident is mentioned by Ibn Al-Atheer, May Allaah Have mercy upon him, in his Al-Kaamil Fee At-Taareekh, and presented under the following title: "An unprecedented strange incident".
It was, in fact, a strange and quite tragic incident.
After a peace treaty was concluded between the Kurg Christian kingdom and the Muslims, a woman became the ruler, and was asked by her ministers, emirs and commanders to marry a man to dispose of the affairs of the kingdom on her behalf, and appear in the foreground before the enemies and in negotiations and other such things. She liked to marry a man from an honorable royal family, and there was no one fit for that marriage among the Kurg. At the same time, a Muslim king, namely Mugheeth Ad-Deen Tugrul Shah ibn Arslan, a Seljuk king who ruled the region of Anatolia, presently Turkey, heard about that, and sent to demand her hand to his son. But the queen rejected under the claim that by no means could a Muslim man rules them.
What did the king Mugheeth Ad-Deen do?
He told them that his son was ready to convert to Christianity and thus become fit to marry her! They accepted and the son converted to Christianity and married the queen of the Kurg and moved to their kingdom to be a ruler over them, and remained Christian. There is no power and no strength save in Allaah!
At that time, the Muslims were degraded to the extent that victory was impossible for them.
How should the idea of conversion to Christianity occur to the mind of the king and his son, not to mention its practical application, even though he would rule the entire world after turning into a Christian? Was it fitting to come from a great king ruling Anatolia? Had it come from a weak slave, his conduct might have been justified by having done so under coercion. But that the offer comes from kings was beyond imagination.
I do not know how this king was titled "Mugheeth Ad-Deen" (aide of religion); and I do not know which aid he presented to religion, and which religion he aided: Islam or Christianity: {For indeed, it is not eyes that are blinded, but blinded are the hearts which are within the breasts.} [Quran 22:46]
To complete the image, it is worth mentioning to tell you about his destiny, in order to know the state of anyone who sells his religion for his world. The Muslim emir converted to Christianity and married the queen of the Kurg. As time passed, the emir knew that his wife was inclined to one of her slaves, and heard many bad things about her, but was unable to do anything, for he was alone living in a vast kingdom (filled with Christians). One day, he entered upon her and saw her with the slave in his bed.He disapproved of that and liked to prevent her from persisting in this relation. But the queen said to him daringly: "You should either accept or leave." He rejected, thereupon she exiled him to another city, put him under house arrest, and restrained his legal competence. Furthermore she married another man.
We seek refuge with Allaah from being apathetic, and ask Allaah to make the concluding of our deeds the best among them all, and the day we will meet Him the best of our days.
It was narrated on the authority of Abu Hurayrah, May Allaah Be Pleased with him, that he said that the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said: "Hasten to do good deeds before you would be occupied from this by afflictions which would be as the parts of the dark night, during which, a man would be a believer in the morning and a disbeliever in the evening, or he would be a believer in the evening and a disbeliever in the morning, and would sell his faith for worldly (transitory) benefits.” [Muslim]
