What were the feelings of Qutuz, May Allaah Have mercy upon him, on that night
I could assure you that his feelings were similar to those of Khaalid ibn Al-Waleed, May Allaah be pleased with him, on the nights prior to his battles.
In this connection, Khaalid ibn Al-Waleed, May Allaah be pleased with him, said, "No night, on which a bride whom I love is wedded to me, or some glad news is given to me about my newborn child, is dearer to me than a very cold night when I am in a military expedition of the Muhaajirs to attack the enemies of Allaah in the morning to come."
That is indeed real enjoyment which no one but the true Mujaahids could feel.
Undoubtedly, Qutuz, May Allaah have mercy upon him, spent this night in his praying place, supplicating Allaah, the Almighty to grant victory to His allies, and firmly plant the feet of the Mujaahids. It was a long-awaited night for which Qutuz, May Allaah have mercy upon him, had been preparing himself since the very moment of his accession to the throne of Egypt. Qutuz, May Allaah Have mercy upon him, strove his utmost in cultivation, and tomorrow would be the day of harvest.
Then the day dawned, and the Muslims prayed submissively, and arranged their rows after the prayer. It was but a few moments later that the sun rose. It was Friday, Ramadhaan 25th 658 A.H. By sunrise, the World illuminated, and the Muslims saw from afar the army of the Tatars.
The gigantic Tatar army came from the direction of the North and started to draw close to ‘Ayn Jaaloot Valley, and stood at the gate of the valley in its horrific multitudes and strong equipment.
None of the Muslims was in the valley, for all of them stood behind the hillocks.
However, as we have already mentioned, the Muslim army's forefront was under the leadership of Rukn Ad-Deen Baybars and did not hide its movement, in order to give the spies of the Tatars the impression that it constituted the entire army. Nevertheless, when the Tatar army arrived, this forefront was also hidden. Then, Qutuz, May Allaah Have mercy upon him, beckoned to it to dismount from the hillocks and stood at the gate of the valley to fight the Tatar army.
{I Will Cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieved.} [Quran 8:11]
The Islamic forces started to flow from over the hillocks inside the ‘Ayn Jaaloot Valley, and moved northwards to come close to the Tatar army. The army forefront did not descend all at once; but in stages in a very amazing way.
Let Saarim Ad-Deen Aybak, the Muslim man in the Tatar army, who was standing beside Kitbuqa, describe the Islamic forces while they descended from the hillocks.
"When the sun rose, the soldiers of Islam appeared. The first brigade was clad in red and white, and their war equipment was good looking."
