Short Description
A senior Saudi scholar has issued a fatwa prohibiting using mobile phones while driving on the grounds that it endangers lives.
Launching a campaign to spread driving ethics, a senior Saudi scholar has issued a fatwa prohibiting using mobile phones while driving on the grounds that it endangers lives.
“It is forbidden to drive and use your mobile because of the risks involved,” Sheikh Khalaf bin Mohammed Al Mutlaq, a member of the Fatwa Authority in eastern Saudi Arabia, was quoted by Arab News reported on Thursday, January 2.
His comments were given to media while launching a new campaign entitled “Don’t Be Captive to Your Mobile.”
The scholar asserted that drivers must focus on the road and if they want to use their mobiles they should stop.
“Using mobile phones while driving is extremely dangerous because driving a car requires much attention and concentration in order to protect lives and public and private property,” he told a seminar on the risks of using mobiles while driving, Emirate 24/7 reported.
“Drivers who use such devices are violating Islam and this means such acts are haram (prohibited)…drivers must not do anything that will detract their attention while driving and threaten lives and property…in case they have to use mobiles while driving, they must stop their cars.”.
Ahmed Al-Adwani, the campaign director, said the administrations of mosques in the region have supported the campaign, with many imams delivering sermons on the matter.
Human life is so highly appreciated in Islam that the matters relating to health take precedence over acts of worship.
Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "There should be neither harm nor reciprocation of harm."
This hadith illustrates that a Muslim should not be a source of harm for others in any way.
