Death of James Joyce
14th of Dhul-Hijjah 1459 AH/ January 13th 1941 AD: Death of James Joyce, an Irish writer and poet, widely considered to be one of the most influential writers of the 20th century. Joyce is a key figure in the development of the modernist novel. He is best known for his landmark novel Ulysses (1922). Other major works are the short-story collection Dubliners (1914), and the novels A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916) and Finnegans Wake (1939).

Death of Ahmad Hasan Al-Bakr
15th of Thul-Hijjah 1402 AH/ October 13th 1982 AD: Death of Ahmad Hasan Al-Bakr, president of Iraq (1968-79). He served as an officer in the Iraqi army but was forced to retire (1958) because of his participation in revolutionary activities. A member of the Ba'ath party, an ultranationalist left-wing group, he became prime minister after the Ba'athists seized power in 1963. He left the government later in that same year when conservative military leaders forced the Ba'athists from power. Bakr became president in 1968 after leading another Ba'athist coup, and was replaced by Saddam Hussein in 1979.
US-Japan Treaty Terminated

HMS Dreadnought Launched
15th of Thul-Hijjah 1323 AH/ February 10th 1906 AD: HMS Dreadnought, a British battleship, launched in 1906 that established the pattern of the turbine-powered, “all-big-gun” warship, a type that dominated the world’s navies for the next 35 years. Placed in reserve in 1919, the ship was sold for scrap the following year and broken up in 1923.
Birth of Ali Maher

Bechara Khoury Resigns

Lebanese President Bechara Khalil Khoury resigns after nine years in rule. He was elected president in 1943 after he played a key role in reconciliations between the Lebanese sects and in the resistance which led to the independence and withdrawal of the French.
Birth of Honore De Balzac
16th of Zul Hejja,Year 1213 AH/ May 20th, 1799 AD: Birth of French man of letters and novelist Honoré De Balzac. Of his masterpieces is the Human Comedy. However, his studies in mannerism made him one of the pioneers among his contemporaries. Balzac lived for fifty years and died on August 18th, 1850. He was a workaholic person as he wrote eighteen hours daily and , as a result, he left behind an ample legacy of literal works.
RSA Declares Sovereignty
16th of Zul Hejja, Year 1380 AH/ May 31st , 1961 AD: South Africa declared itself a sovereign republic after it seceded the British Commonwealth. Its constitution expressly recognized racism between the whites and the blacks. The South African Union was established under the umbrella of the Commonwealth and continued for about 51 years under the authority of the British Crown.
Muslim Scholar Society Founded
16th of Zul Hejja, Year 1350 AH/ May 5th , 1931 AD: Algeria's scholars found an academic society which was named the Muslim Scholars Society. This society hosted icons of thought in Algeria such as Abdul Hamid Ibn Badees, al Bashir el Ibrahimi, and Ahmed Tawfeek el Madany. They chose a slogan reflecting their attitude and inclination, mainly" Islam is our religion… Arabic is our language , and Algeria is our homeland". The society was headed by Abdul Hamid Ibn Badees.
Birth of Salah Abdul-Sabur
16th of Zul Hejja,Year 1349 AH/ May 3rd, 1931 AD: Birth of Egyptian poet Salah Abdul Saboor in Zagazig , Sharkeya, north of Egypt. He wrote a number of poetic plays foremost among which is Al Haggag Tragedy, that he wrote in 1965, besides four others poetic plays. He died in 1981.
