Bulgaria anti-Roma rally in Sofia

About 2,000 Bulgarians have marched in the centre of the capital, Sofia, in an anti-Roma protest. The demonstrators said they were against corruption and organised crime, which they linked to Bulgaria's Roma or gypsy ethnic minority. There have been protests and sporadic violence since the death a week ago of a youth hit by a car driven by relatives of a Roma clan boss. President Georgy Parvanov has called for "an end to the language of hatred".
 

Hundreds arrested in New York protest

More than 700 people from the Occupy Wall Street protest movement have been arrested on New York's City's Brooklyn Bridge, police say. They were part of a larger group crossing the bridge from Manhattan, where they have been camped out near Wall Street for two weeks. Some entered the bridge's roadway and were met by a large police presence and detained, most for disorderly conduct. The loosely-organised group is protesting against corporate greed.
   

Guantanamo tribunal for USS Cole suspect

The prime suspect in the 2000 bombing of the USS Cole will face a military tribunal in Guantanamo Bay, US defence officials have said. Abd al-Nashiri, a Saudi of Yemeni descent, could face the death penalty if he is convicted. The ruling, issued by the US Department of Defense, means the US must bring him before a military judge within 30 days. At least 17 sailors were killed and 40 were wounded in the attack in Aden on 12 October 2000.
 

US bomb plot 'aimed at Pentagon'

A 26-year-old US citizen has been arrested for allegedly plotting to fly explosive-packed, remote controlled planes into the Pentagon and the US Capitol in Washington DC. Rezwan Ferdaus was also charged with attempting to supply materials to al-Qaeda and aid attacks on US soldiers. The Northeastern University physics graduate is accused of planning to commit "jihad" since early 2010.
   

Frantic call by Jackson doctor

Key aides of Michael Jackson have told the manslaughter trial of his doctor of events on the day the superstar died. His personal assistant described a "frantic" call from Dr Conrad Murray. Head of security Faheem Muhammad said he saw the medic try to revive the unconscious star, as two of Jackson's children looked on in tears.
 

Al-Qaeda in 9/11 warning to Iran

Al-Qaeda has accused Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of spreading "conspiracy theories" about the 9/11 attacks in 2001. Inspire, an al-Qaeda-linked online magazine, described Mr Ahmadinejad's controversial speech to the United Nations last week as "ridiculous". The Iranian leader said he believed the World Trade Center towers could not have been brought down by aircraft. The article said such a belief "stands in the face of all logic and evidence".

Protesters arrested in Manhattan

New York police say at least 80 protesters have been arrested in a march as several hundred demonstators marched through the streets of lower Manhattan. Saturday's protests were part of a series of demonstrations in the past week against  against bank bailouts, the mortgage crisis and the US state of Georgia's execution of Troy Davis. The marchers carried signs spelling out their goals: "Tax the rich," one placard said, "We want money for healthcare not corporate welfare," read another.
 

France imposes first niqab fines

Falling satellite will crash the earth

An amateur astronomer has recorded images of the out-of-control US satellite as it tumbles back to Earth. Theirry Legault, from Paris, captured the video as the satellite passed over northern France on 15 September. The six-tonne, 20-year-old spacecraft has fallen out of orbit and is expected to crash somewhere on Earth on or around 24 September. The US space agency says the risk to life from the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) is 1 in 3,200.

Greece to accelerate austerity measures

The quakes, the biggest a 5.8 magnitude, were centred some 50km (30 miles) southeast of Guatemala City but tremors were felt across the country. A policy banning open homosexuality in the US military has been repealed after nearly two decades. The dropping of "don't ask, don't tell" means service members can now reveal they are gay without fear of investigation or discharge. "Repeal Day" parties have been organised across the country to mark the victory for gay rights. The US Congress voted last year to repeal the law, which was introduced in 1993 under the Clinton administration. Under the policy, gay people were permitted to serve as long as they did not openly acknowledge their sexual orientation, while commanders were not allowed to ask.
