A brief story of the early and modern history of Islam in Brunei & Malaysia. A small Islamic kingdom was founded early in Brunei when its king Awang Alak Betatar traveled in 828 AH to meet with Sultan Muhammad Shah where he accepted Islam there. Also some Arab Muslims came to Brunei to propagate Islam and were encouraged by the king of Brunei at that time. This led to the spread of Islam in Brunei as well as the islands of Solo and Philippine

Al-Mas`ûdî, a famous Muslim Historian, used to call Indonesia "the Islands of Mihrâj". However, the rest of Muslim historians used to name it after one of the names of its islands such as Sumatra, Jawa (Java), etc. It is said that the name Indonesia consists of two syllables: Indo (India), and nesia (Islands). Some ancient historians used to refer to it by "Islands of East India". Sometimes, it was called "the green land". It carries the name Indonesia since the 13th hijri century – the 19th century AC.[1]

Islam entered West Africa under the leadership of `Uqbah Ibn Nâf`. Ghana is considered as the oldest empire in the continent. The Muslim armies attempted to conquer it but failed in the beginning. However, Islam was spread among the tribes of Hausa, Borno, Sontik, and Doghamba. The empire of Ghana became weak at that time.

Islam had its positive scientific, civil and moral effects on the continent of Europe. Islam entered Europe from the eastern side. The Muslims attempted many times to conquer the city of Constantinople (today's Istanbul) since the caliphate of Mu`awiyyah Ibn Abû Sufyyân. They could not overcome such city because of its strong forts until it was finally conquered by The Muslim leader Muhammad al-Fâteh in 857 AH. – 1453 AC.

Arabs had commercial ties with Africa. Muslims migrated to Habasha (Abyssinia) where An-Najashi (the Negus) was ruling, which formed the first steps of Islam into Africa. By the decline of the Umayyad caliphate some Umayyads fled to Andalusia while others fled to Eritrea where they spread Islam.
