A British warning was sent to the government of Saad Zaghlool following the assassination Sir Lee Stack, the British commander of the Egyptian army and Governor-General of the Sudan. In the warning, the British government demanded an apology from the government and paying a proper dead money, as well as the withdrawal of the Egyptian forces from Sudan. The Egyptian government agreed to these demands except that related to the Sudan. When the British insisted on their demands, Saad Zaghlool resigned in protest of that.
