Short Description
The elite of the city went carrying its keys to Kitbuqa, the new leader. He received them, accepted their surrender, and granted them security.
Now, let us return to talk about Damascus.
The elite of the city went carrying its keys to Kitbuqa, the new leader. He received them, accepted their surrender, and granted them security. Then, he headed with his army to enter the large city of Damascus.
Damascus, the capital of the Umayyad Caliphate fell, just as Baghdad, the capital of the Abbasid Caliphate had already fallen (two years earlier)!
Damascus fell, and it was one of the greatest cities in Islam, and one of the most important bordering sites of Jihaad, and had the most developed houses of knowledge.
The Tatarian armies advanced towards Damascus, and swarmed into it from all its gates facing no resistance!
Alas Damascus!
O pearl of Shaam, and core of the Islamic world!
Where are Abu ‘Ubaydah ibn Al-Jarraah, Khaalid ibn Al-Waleed, Yazeed ibn Abu Sufyaan, ‘Amr ibn Al-‘Aas and Shurahbeel ibn Hasanah, May Allaah Be Pleased with them, who had previously conquered this fortified city over six centuries earlier?
Where is Mu‘aawiyah ibn Abu Sufyaan, May Allaah Be Pleased with him, who ruled (a great part of) this World from this place?
Where is ‘Umar ibn ‘Abdul-‘Azeez, May Allaah Have mercy upon him, who spread justice on earth from this city?
Where are the Umayyad caliphs, May Allaah Have mercy upon them, who had conquered large territories, which were being sacked, one after another, by the Tatars?
Where are ‘Imaad Ad-Deen Zengi and Noor Ad-Deen Mahmood, May Allaah Have mercy upon them, who, with their Jihaad, wrote lines of glory, honor and pride?
Where is Saladin, May Allaah Have mercy upon him, who is lying (in his resting place) in Damascus?
Days passed and the Muslims saw in Damascus things which were never expected.
