Short Description
Why I chose this goal “piety”? What is meant by piety?
Why I chose this goal “piety”?
Because Allah Almighty is Himself chose piety as a goal for fasting, Allah says: (O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous.), Al-Baqarah, 183
However, what is meant by piety?
For a Muslim to be described by piety, he should know first its sense, and then he seeks the means leading to it.
The Prophet “PBUH” defined piety by saying: (The Servant does not attain the rank of piety, until he leaves the permissible for fear of the impermissible.[1] )
Also, the Prophet “PBUH” said: (who takes these rulings from me, so he may effectuate them, or conveys them to the one who effectuates them? Abu-Hrairah said: it is me, O Messenger of Allah! The Prophet “PBUH” held my hand and said: avert the prohibited, thus you would be among the most worshippers…..[2])
The companions and the righteous after the Prophet Muhammad defined the piety according to each own perspective. A man asked Abu-Hurairah: what is piety? He replied: (have you ever walked in a road containing thorns? The man replied: yes. Abu-Hurairah asked: what is your action towards that? The man replied: I would deviate from thorns. Abu-Hurairah said: this is piety.[3] )
